  1. Back Burner

“Used to describe a boy or girl of slight interest who isn’t exactly qualified to date at the moment, but may come in handy later.

Thus one places them on the ‘back burner,’ keeping them warm (subtle flirting, etc.), until you’re ready to chow down (i.e. date, talk, hang out with when one has nothing else to do, etc.).”

在使用方法上,“把别人当备胎”一般表述为have/keep/put/place someone on the back burner。 “备胎转正定级”是move someone off the back burner。变成备胎的女士是back burner girl,也是有更粗俗的叫法,如back burner bitch。而男士备胎则是back burner guy或back burner bro,通称BBB。比如:

①—He rarely talks to me these days, do you think he’s just being busy?

—I hate to say this, but I think he’s back-burnering you.

②If Shelly breaks it off with me I always have Nancy, my back burner girl.

  2. Rebound

Rebound的字面上意义是“to spring or bounce back after hitting or colliding with something”(遭受碰撞以后回弹力),也可本义“to recover, as from depression or disappointment”(从压抑感或心寒情况中恢复正常),可作为形容词,也可作为专有名词。

“Getting into a relationship with/hooking up with someone you generally don’t care about much simply because you have recently broken up with someone and you are in the process of getting over them and want to have someone to fill the gap until your next meaningful relationship.”

①Oh, it’s nothing serious. She’s just trying to get over her last breakup. To her, he’s just a disposable rebound guy.

②I don’t really like her; she’s just my rebound (girl). This rebound relationship doesn’t count.

  3. Fallback

这类备胎可立即称之为a fallback,或a fallback boy/man/guy、a fallback girl/woman、a fallback partner/person/lover等。比如:

①The majority of my ex-girlfriends have had “fallback men” lined up in the latter stages of our failed relationships.

②If both of you want the relationship to continue, then neither of you should have a fallback.

  4. Backup

①Dr. Saltz says it’s better to resolve a relationship than to keep a “backup.”

②You’d better watch out. Your boyfriend has all the symptoms of having a backup girl.

  1) A second line:二线,第二防御,这个词和fallback真是是最佳搭档,撤离到第二防御(fall back to the second line),就找到备胎能够授予的归属感。比如:You take me just as a second line?

She’s the type of girl that’s OK with being second best.

I take Bob as my safety net in case me and Bill don’t work out.
